Wok this way

Somewhere along this traffic-congested Ortigas Avenue is a quiet gastronomical spot frequented by locals and tried by first time converts. Who would have not if everyone you know started describing how a steamy pot of chicken sizzles and seems to dance right before your eyes.

Han Wok Chinese Cuisine knows how to tickle everyone’s appetite and send them home full and happy. Kleng-Kleng took me to this place one lazy late morning to lunch before proceeding to Tita Susie’s place in SFDM. We were greeted by a server and tables occupied by their local Chinese patrons already in the middle of a hefty lunch.

What’s on our order slip?

Kleng-Kleng already had a fixed menu in mind before we came to Han Wok. Han Wok 3 Cups Chicken topped her list and a whole lot more: steamed fish with soy sauce, hot and sour soup, poached tofu and mango terrine for dessert.

While waiting for our food, we were served with complimentary crackers.

The taste test

It was Han Wok’s sizzling 3 Cups Chicken that swept me way. The taste was somewhat a cross between your mom’s home-cooked chicken adobo and Chinese asado….and a lot more in between that shuts your mind you just continue eating. It was superbly delicious!

Their tasty boneless steamed fish with soy sauce literally melted in our mouths. Not so much on their gorgeous looking poached tofu. Vegetarian convert Kleng-Kleng ordered boring lychees swimming on ice for dessert.

But my mango terrine fix ended the big meal with a smile.

Service factor

Every hour, Tess, the restaurant manager, would raffle off prizes for their customers. I think she’s the ultimate party host who could befriend even the most cynical among us. While in the middle of the lunch, she gave everyone a slip of paper where we wrote down our names, addresses and contact numbers then put them all in a fish bowl. Three guys won special prizes for that hour. That’s good service that would make people go back for more.

If you’re craving for authentic Chinese recipes, go to Han Wok. The restaurant is located at Madison Square, Ortigas Avenue, Greenhills, San Juan City. For delivery or reservation, call up 724-4051 or 721-7479.
