Bewitching sandwiches from Almon Marina

Perhaps the cancer scare Ate Ruby has been indoctrinating me about changed my eating philosophy today. Stop patronizing fast food, drink water, live long and healthy. Think of your heart, your kidneys, your bones, your spleen. Since I’m already a thirty-something, I should start worrying about my ovaries, too. Hmn.

The first step to achieve quite a pompous dream for me is to look for eating places that serve healthy menu. As a proof that I am indeed serious in keeping myself trimmed in all angles, I decided to try Almon Marina after many years of ignoring it.

Tuna Melt

Last week was my Almon Marina sandwich week. During my visits, I ordered two of their gourmet sandwiches: Tuna Melt and Maryland. I’m not really a sandwich person but when I tasted these two, it changed the way I look at sandwiches.

Maryland

I ordered a Tuna Melt on my first visit. It has apple slices, tuna and cheese on wheat bread. I bought it for only P95. On my second visit, I had Maryland at P190. Maryland has ham, eggs, lettuce and a dressing.

My Almon Marina sandwich experience busted three lingering myths I have for this restaurant:

Myth #1: It is expensive

Almon Marina looks intimidating from inside and out. It is so unlike other eating places surrounding them. Come to think of it, it reminds me of a coffee shop I used to pass by downtown Kingston last year.

But if you will compare prices with your favorite fast food or coffee shop, their prices are reasonable. Instead of going for a high-calorie fatty Quarter Pounder, why not pick one of those healthy gourmet sandwiches? There’s not even a huge price difference.

Myth #2: What the heck is gourmet?

Their menu offers sound so un-Pinoy. Somehow it discourages people from entering and instead, drives them away to the nearest fast food they are so familiar with. The word “gourmet” is often misconstrued to fancy and highly-expensive dishes.

The truth is a gourmet dish is like any other dish that uses fresh and healthy ingredients. And it doesn’t have to be expensive either.

Myth #3: It’s for sosi

If you have been a Jollibee kid all your life, changing your burger steak diet to an Almon Marina steak could be a near-catatonic experience. But there are less expensive options you could choose from if only you would discipline your eyes from scanning every person that crosses your path. I am not sosi but I now eat there.

You may visit Almon Marina branch at the ground level of SM Megamall building A. It is just right across Powerbooks.
