Kainan ni Augusto

Welcome to early 19th century

Welcome to early 19th century

I have lived almost 20 years of my life as an orphaned Pasigueno and passed through Barangay Kapitolyo hundreds of times before. But the thought of dining at Kainan ni Augusto all those years never crossed my mind. Judging from its exterior, I thought it was a plain stall selling rice cakes and puto bungbong. But there was more to it than meets the eye.

The first thing that would greet you from the entrance are the antiques that gave me the feeling of visiting a museum hundred years older than the one in Pasig downtown. Those huge mirrors, old dining tables and chandeliers do create a creepy feeling of being transferred back through time. But at the center part of this seemingly old structure is a food counter that made Kainan ni Augusto a byword among the office workers in the area during lunch time.

Food is delicious and budget-friendly. We ordered dinuguan, vegetables, rice and soda for only around P100, making a decent but filling meal cost between P50 and P60 per person. But a diner gets more value if you would count the Twilight Zone ambiance you just don’t get from anywhere else. You can even buy that wooden chair you have just sat on at P2,500 and give it to grandma. Let me know if it comes with a white Adidas sweater I left in haste during my first visit there.

You can find Kainan ni Augusto at the corner of United Street corner Kapitolyo Drive in Pasig City.
